Narcissistic personality disorder is a mental health condition in which people have an unreasonably high sense of their own importance. They need and seek too much attention and want people to admire them. People with this disorder may lack the ability to understand or care about the feelings of others. But behind this mask of extreme confidence, they are not sure of their self-worth and are easily upset by the slightest criticism.
PSYCHOLOGY - the psychology of Narcissism selfishness, involving a sense of entitlement, a lack of empathy, and a need for admiration, as characterizing a personality type.
PSYCHOANALYSIS - the psychoanalysis of Narcissism self-centeredness arising from failure to distinguish the self from external objects, either in very young babies or as a feature of mental disorder.
I recently heard a Psychiatrist explain something in the most simple of ways regarding Narcissism:
'You can be a Narcissist without being a sociopath or Psychopath, but you cannot be a sociopath/Psychopath without being a narcissist.'
I do believe that my own personal monster exhibited all the classic signs of being a sociopath.
And once again she explained that while a 'Sociopath is created, a Psychopath is born that way.' Mine was created through years of abuse and neglect at the hands of his parents and siblings. It doesn't excuse the behaviour but it helps to understand the pathology behind it.
Gaslighting, control, withholding, discarding, word salad and so much more all done with the coldness and lack of feeling shown by a true sociopath.
I want it to be very clear that if you have an abuser in your life.... then narcissism and/or a sociopathic/psychopathic personality has to be the final diagnosis. This isn't according to me or my own knowledge, this is through reading and listening to trained individuals with all the fancy letters after their names.
They have done the research, years of research on 1000's of individuals and their varying personality types and disorders.
Knowledge is power remember dear hearts. Educate yourself and you will find the courage to get away before you are destroyed mentally, emotionally and physically.
Stay strong and survive.
